Learn Mode and Home-Row Training

The 5-level, 15-lesson touch-typing course, from the home row to a full-speed challenge, with an 80% accuracy unlock gate.

Learn Mode is a structured touch-typing course: 5 levels, 15 lessons in total, designed to be worked through in order. Score 80% accuracy on a lesson to unlock the next one.

Progress tracking

The Learn Mode overview shows Lessons Completed (out of 15), Stars Earned (up to 3 per lesson, 45 total), your Best Lesson WPM, and your Total Practice Time.

The five levels

  1. Level 1 - Home Row (asdf jkl;): rest your fingers on the home row, then add G and H, then real home-row words
  2. Level 2 - Top Row (qwert yuiop): reach up from the home row, then mix top and home rows together
  3. Level 3 - Bottom Row (zxcv bnm): curl fingers down, then drill every letter key, then full-alphabet words
  4. Level 4 - builds on the first three rows (continues the same 80%-to-unlock progression)
  5. Level 5 - Full Speed Challenge: a 40-word common-words sprint, a real-world quote challenge, and a full-speed challenge with capitals and punctuation

Why the home row first

The home row (asdf jkl;) is where your fingers rest between keystrokes, so every other key is reached from there and back. Learn Mode starts here deliberately before introducing the top and bottom rows, which is also why Level 1 is gated the same way every later lesson is - 80% accuracy before moving on.

Finger placement on the home row

Left pinky rests on A, left ring on S, left middle on D, left index on F; right index on J, right middle on K, right ring on L, right pinky on the semicolon key. Most keyboards have a small raised bump on F and J, so you can find the home row by touch without looking down.

The 80% unlock rule

Each lesson after the first stays locked until you score at least 80% accuracy on the one before it - not 100%, so the course rewards consistent accuracy rather than perfection. This paces the course to how accurately you are actually typing, rather than a fixed schedule.

After you finish

Once you have cleared the home-row and full-keyboard lessons, use the Test tab to turn your new accuracy into a measured WPM, or try Race Mode to test your speed against three AI typists.
